The Dawn Block: A Free Quilt Pattern
The Dawn quilt block is a Free Quilt Pattern that's available when you subscribe to our newsletter! This block may be simple to make but she's not boring to look at by any means!
By using 4 different colours for the centre strips, it appears as though the fabrics have been woven together. It's best to use fabrics with good contrast for this block to maintain that woven effect.
Ways to Use The Dawn Block
Throw Pillow:
Throw pillows are probably one of my favourite ways of using a big quilt block. Dawn would be perfect for such a project. Below you can see how I used a quilt block (not Dawn, but you get the idea) to make a throw pillow.
Full-size quilt:
This one might be kinda obvious, but this quilt block can be used to make a full-size quilt! The digital mockup below will give you an idea of what a quilt made with 16 Dawn blocks would look like. Of course, you could always mix it with another block like Grace for a totally different effect!
Last but not least, you could use Dawn in a sampler like we did in our Fair Weather Sampler! This block was designed to be a part of this sampler! I'll have more on the Fair Weather Sampler at a later date, but we used this Dawn block as well as Grace, Leah, and Elizabeth (all of which are available in our shop) to make this sampler. We then added a pieced border. It makes an adorable wall hanging.

Approximate Finished Size:
The Dawn block when finished is approximately 12" x 12" (or about 30cm square).
Fabric Requirements:
To make this block, you'll need a ⅓ yard of fabric for the background and a fat eight or ⅛ yard each of 4 different fabrics.
Skill Level:
We recommend this pattern for Advanced Beginners. While it is a fairly simple block, it is best if you have completed at least one other project and have a good understanding of basic quilting skills.
